Magpie

By Megan Thomas

Elizabeth Day’s fifth novel (and seventh book) was the kind of bestseller in 2021 where you seldom went on the tube in London and didn’t see someone reading it.

Yet, miraculously, I managed to have no idea what it was about until I started reading it this year and it was such a page-turning thriller with twists that I truly did not see coming that, if you’re reading this and also don’t know what it’s about, I suggest you very quickly get a copy and don’t go onto the internet until you’re done. Also, stop reading this, because I’m going to give a spoiler-free plot summary now.

Marisa and Jake’s relationship started quick but from the very start, Marisa knew it was right. They both want children, it all just works, so they take a leap of faith after a few months of dating, move in together and fall pregnant. It all seems perfect, until they need to take on a lodger, Kate, who gets uncomfortably close to Jake very quickly and starts tussling for power and affection with Marisa. What’s going on? Why does Jake seem so close to Kate when she’s just moved in? It all feels a bit off to Marisa, as it should…

I must confess that once the primary plot twist was revealed, I was greedily waiting for more (which is unreasonable) and as a result I found the ending a little disappointing. But overall a quick, exciting and original read that is perfect for devouring in big gulps.
