The Midnight Library

By Megan Thomas

I’m not exactly trend-setting here, but I adored this book – and flew through it during a holiday in Italy earlier this year (where it was treated to the scenic photoshoot).

There was a lot of hype when it came out, so I pulled a classic rookie error of not believing the hype and waiting years to read it then I really thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps my skepticism did the trick, so my advice is to go in with an open mind and no expectations… and then hopefully, enjoy!

Nina is unhappy, dissatisfied and living a life of what she considers to be increasingly little meaning. A series of bad events and a lot of pills lead her to The Midnight Library, where she encounters her old school librarian and shelves full of different ways her life could have panned out. Each branch of her tree of life sprouts from decisions she’s made through her life, which are helpfully categorised in the Book of Regrets. A book which I’m not sure I’d want to pick up anytime soon…

At first, Nina thinks it will be easy enough to sort out where her life went so terribly wrong. But after trying out versions where she’s in a famous band, where she doesn’t leave her ex, where she moves to Australia with her best friend, where she becomes an arctic explorer or an Olympian… there seems to be something more that she’s missing. Will Nina ever find a life where she feels she truly belongs?
