Iron Flame

By Megan Thomas

I inhaled this off the back of finishing the first in this series, Fourth Wing. In that post, I went on about how much my adoration for this series surprised me, so I won’t dwell on that here. Go read that one too. Instead, let’s discuss the plot a bit more. MILD SPOILERS AHEAD.

At the beginning of Fourth Wing, Violet Sorrengail has spent her whole life training to join the Scribe Quadrant of Navarre, where she will dedicate her life to recording the history of her world. However, her mother, who is the Commander of Basgiath War College, decides, for reasons we only get a glimmer of late in Iron Flame, that Violet must instead enter the Riders Quadrant. But this is not quite as simple as the entry exam required for the scribes; Violet must enter a college to train for war and, most importantly, create a life-bond with a dragon to ride. While avoiding getting incinerated.

Fast-forward through the successful bonding and survival of a gruelling first year, as well as the enemies to lovers arc between Violet and Xaden Riorson, the only son of the man who has gone down in history as the leader of a vicious, failed rebellion, and we find ourselves in the throes of their tumultuous romantic relationship. In comes the sex, the lovers’ spats, the jealousy, the crazy ex and a lot more secrets than Violet could have ever found in the library. This all takes place during another war, a revolution, and some seriously epic developments of what the Basgiath military elite have been keeping secret for many years. I know I said to be mindful of spoilers, but I did say they’d be mild, so this is where I’ll leave the overview.

As for the next installment of the Empyrean series, Onyx Storm, I am very excited to see how Violet and Xaden will overcome the next enormous obstacle as a couple – hopefully as a more united front, learning a few lessons from previous mistakes.
