Markus Zusak’s historical fiction novel is another weeper, that’s for sure. One of those (and it admittedly happens a lot) where I can’t keep reading because I physically can’t see through the tears, not because I don’t want to.
The main characters: Death and Liesel, set in Nazi-Germany. Amidst the destruction and loss of childhood that can be expected from a book in which Death is an actual character, Liesel learns to read and subsequently steals books that the Nazis intend on destroying. A book about power and tolerance (or the absence thereof) – both political and of the mind/self.
