This book was recommended to me with the caveat, “Don’t read anything about it, just read it”. While I offer trigger warnings for self-harm, suicide and violence surrounding sexual identity, I recommend doing the same, as it was an incredibly immersive story with completely unexpected developments throughout. Stop reading now if you plan on doing that.
Written by an anonymous author (the mystique is endless), The Silver Cage tells the story of a full-time game-streamer and part-time freelance journalist and blogger called Michael, who is tasked with writing a profile for the New York Times on the enigmatic author Caleb Bright. The two have a terrible first encounter, which is followed by an almost-frightening tension in their interactions thereafter. But is that all that’s causing the tension?
At first, I had trouble keeping up with which character was speaking – we change between Michael and Caleb’s first-person perspectives in each chapter. But soon, that was no issue, as I started to know the characters so well that I could tell who was speaking without needing to check the chapter head.
A compelling though harrowing narrative which rather effortlessly tackles weighty topics of religion, sexuality, trauma and love, The Silver Cage stays with you well after the last page.
