Queen K

By Megan Thomas

Chalet girl meets Below Deck meets the Talented Mr Ripley meets The Great Gatsby… with some Russian billions thrown into the mix. Are you tempted?

Sarah Thomas’ debut thriller, set between the luxury chalet, London mansion, and super yacht of a Russian oligarch and his family, tells a lot more than a story of a wealthy family and their tutor, Melanie, hired to get Alex into a private UK boarding school. It is also a deep dive into the secretive, sordid underworld of Russian wealth with evocative characterisation that leaves you in a constant emotional state of empathy and disgust.

One thing we know from the very beginning: Kata, the Russian billionaire’s wife, disappeared one night at a party she hosted in the Maldives. Years later, nobody knows what happened. Who is to blame? Who played a role? Who kept quiet when they should have spoken up? Who spoke up when they should’ve stayed quiet? Should anyone have seen it coming? Could they have stopped it even if they did?

Through the novel, we trace back to when Melanie was first introduced to the family. As Melanie’s relationship with Alex evolves, so does her love/hate obsession with Kata… And it ironically seems like the more involved she gets, the less prepared she is for the events that happen at that mysterious party on the Queen K, night Kata disappears.
