The Chalet

By Megan Thomas

Being an aspiring novelist and having done a ski season mean only one thing: I’m rather desperate to write a novel set on a ski season (because what is fiction if not just a glamorisation of one’s own life?) I’m working on something else at the moment, but every time I see a book related to a skiing holiday, I’m intrigued. How have they captured the insanity of the experience without it seeming farcical? Do they describe the mountains or is that boring? Is the entire thing unrelatable for most readers? And so I ask until I’ve convinced myself to buy it. The Chalet was a part of one such internal dialogue.

A very fun twist to this particular novel is that it is a murder mystery. When two young men disappear in a blizzard and only one returns, it’s seen as a tragedy but not suspicious. Years later, in the same ski village, we learn that there was a way more sinister side to the story. Someone knows, too, and will not be resting until there is justice.

This isn’t really my genre (apart from the snowy element), but it was fast-paced and easy to read – a refreshing holiday option. The plot was complex and clever, and the author managed a story set across multiple timelines with the grace of a professional skier.

If anyone has any recommendations for other ski-related novels, please comment below – I’m all ears!
