Disgrace

J.M Coetzee’s controversial novel is topical again, because Fiona Snyckers’ new novel Lacuna is being published by Pan Macmillan. Lacuna will be a response to Disgrace from the point of view of the character Lucy Lurie.

Disgrace is extremely multilayered and I have mixed feelings about it. It’s about David Lurie, an English lecturer at a technical university in Cape Town in post-Apartheid South Africa. After disgracing himself with a sexual affair with one of his students, he is forced to resign and moves to his daughter’s farm in the Eastern Cape. Here, atrocious acts of violence occur and the characters internalise and externalise this very differently, though I imagine Snyckers’ novel will give the depth on Lucy’s front that Disgrace was missing.

A story without distinct notions of heroes and villains; power, exploitation, abuse, contradiction, redemption and resilience.
