By Megan Thomas

I spotted this copy whilst looking through a big cardboard box of “3 for £1” books (my absolute weakness despite my ever-growing TBR pile) at Brick Lane Market, and I remembered just how much I enjoyed reading it.
This naughty family pet, Marley, a gorgeous golden ball of energy, is quite hilarious and enchanting in the book but I found myself permanently grumpy in the movie because his charm was masked by how much chaos and destruction he caused.
It gets a good balance of general amusement and personal anecdote, because doggy-antics can sometimes seem laborious when it’s someone else’s pet – kind of like explaining your dreams to people. Controversial opinion, I know…
