More Than You Were

By Megan Thomas

This is the first poetry anthology by Christina Thatcher, though I read her second collection How To Carry Fire first.

It was a fascinating experience reading them backwards, because it was an insight into the foundations which kept How To Carry Fire upright.

Where How To Carry Fire showed immense strength in how to weather adversity, More Than You Were showed why that strength was necessary and the pain that inspired it. At its core, it is a selection of short poems where Christina grapples with the plethora of emotions that accompany the death of a parent and an addict, her relationship with her late father and his relationship with addiction.

More Than You Were leaves you feeling raw, like you’ve been licked by a fire but without having to wear the scars afterwards. And then of course you’ve got the balm lined up with How To Carry Fire.
