Me Talk Pretty One Day

This essay collection by David Sedaris was published in 2000, but it has aged so well. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the author, which made the laugh-out-loud stories all the more personal.

Between hysterical tales of his cruel speech therapist, his pathologically unkind French teacher, his attempts to explain what the Easter Bunny is in French, his experience living in Paris and his brief stint trying to learn the guitar, he also weaves in moments of intimacy and introspection, somehow moving from his parents’ intolerance of his homosexuality to his dad’s habit of eating rotting food without so much as an awkward silence. It’s in his unflinchingly smart and witty turn of phrase, and in his delightful self-deprecating approach to life, I think.
